Hey everyone,
A couple of weeks ago, I did a post on the contrasting styles of sisters Beyoncé and Solange Knowles (see here). I wanted to continue that concept as a series called “A Tale of Two Sisters” because I’ve found lots of fashionable siblings who share chicness and cool in addition to DNA. For this week, I’m featuring two famous sisters from the past, Jackie Kennedy (or Jackie O) and Lee Radziwill. Jacqueline is often considered one of the most, if not the most influential fashion icons of the 20th century. Though she passed away in 1994 from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, her impossibly elegant sensibility has endured. Younger sister Lee is still one of the most prominent socialites in the world and is often spotted at the front row, even at age 79.
Both sisters grew up in the Hamptons for much of their young lives, which exposed them to the sophisticated yet effortless beachwear look. Jackie carried the low key look on after marrying John F. Kennedy, spending summers on the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport in loose striped tee shirts and capris. Lee was her sister’s confidant and companion during the White House years and wore similarly chic shift dresses and oversized sunglasses, but with more of a casual ease. Throughout their lives, both Bouvier sisters donned clean, elegant pieces with a polite (Jackie) or more rebellious (Lee) personality all their own.
Let’s start with Lee…
