Modern Day Fashion Icon: Jennifer Lawrence

Hey Everyone,

I’m so excited to finally feature Jennifer Lawrence as a modern day fashion icon. After getting Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for her role in Winter’s Bone back in 2010, JLaw played the part of the young heroine, Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games and became one of today’s most well-known (and fashionable) young actresses. Not to mention, Jennifer’s Oscar-winning performance in Silver Linings Playbook was truly incredible. Seriously, you should all see it now!

Not only is Jennifer a talented actress and one of the biggest names in Hollywood but she has also been developing her glamorous yet laid-back cool look (which may sound like a major oxymoron) over the past couple of years and always wows on the red carpet. Jennifer is the new face of Miss Dior and has been wearing many of Raf Simons’ designs for the house recently. Keep reading to see how to get her unique look.

Top Ten Looks from Paris Fall 2013 Fashion Week: My Picks

Hey Everyone,

As you all know, fashion month has finally come to a close. All of the excitement and craziness (and hairspray!) is over, until next season, that is. My real question is, how does Cara Delevingne appear in all of those shows? Was she cloned or something? Seriously though, she walked in every show I looked at; she’s ubiquitous.

Anyways, I thought this season, Paris was particularly strong. Raf Simmons at Dior, Alber Elbaz at Lanvin, Alexander Wang at Balenciaga, Phoebe Philo at Celine, and Marc at Louis Vuitton really pulled out the stops, creating distinct, modern looks that were true to their respective labels. Hermes, which I’m not always a personal fan of (though I’m absolutely in love with all of the accessories) was wonderfully luxurious and sophisticated. In comparison, Saint Laurent was quite disappointing. The entire collection seemed like nothing new or special. It really just looked like grunge pieces that you could buy at Forever 21 or Urban. That, however, is an entirely different discussion. Here are my favorite looks of the week.

Trending: Leather, Leather Everywhere

Hey Everyone,

I’ve been noticing a major trend lately carried over from the runway shows last year. Leather fabrics have cropped up on dresses, tops, pants, and accessories. The look ranges from tough and edgy to polished and minimalist, so I think everyone could incorporate some leather pieces into their wardrobes.

Tip: Stick to one leather piece at a time. You can also always start small with leather accessories, like the clutch with the black leather detailing below. Less is definitely more with this trend!

Modern Day Fashion Icon: Allison Williams

Hey everyone,

I’ve been hooked on Girls recently and am almost done with the first season. Be sure to catch the second season, which premiered this past Sunday! My favorite character on the show is Hannah’s roommate, Marnie, played by the talented and beautiful Allison Williams. Allison is becoming one of fashion’s newest It girls, with her preppy, All-American style and glossy locks (seriously so jealous of how amazing her hair is!).

Modern Day Fashion Icon: Carey Mulligan

Hey Everyone,

So I haven’t done a Modern Day Fashion Icons post in a long time and I thought it would be fun to start that up again. For this week, I’m featuring the lovely Carey Mulligan, who’s only going to play one of my favorite literary characters ever in a certain film coming out this spring…That’s right, Miss Mulligan will be playing Daisy in The Great Gatsby! Isn’t she just too perfect as a 20s flapper??

Can’t wait for this movie to come out!

Anyways, Carey Mulligan has established herself as quite the fashionista in her own right and is known for her adorable pixie haircut and gamine look. Some of her staples include girly minis, pumps, and sparkles. Whether she’s wearing a ball gown or jeans and a tee, Carey always looks polished, but not like she’s trying too hard. She reminds me of a certain blond gamine actress who also played Daisy in a past rendition of The Great Gatsby. That’s right, Carey Mulligan and Mia Farrow share more than just the same role… the platinum blonde pixie cuts, effortlessly chic style…they could practically be sisters. (Just kidding!)

Inspired By: Anna Karenina <3

Hi Everyone,

I know it’s been a very long time since I last posted, but I’ve been terribly busy this year so far. Who said Senior year was relaxed? Not me! Anyways, I’d like to get back to posting regularly, especially during the holiday season, which is my favorite time of year. I hope everyone had a great thanksgiving and happy black friday to all!

Wearing Chanel Fine Jewelry #obsessed

Instead of hitting the stores today (like I normally do), I decided to sleep in and go to a movie. I ended up seeing Anna Karenina and was absolutely taken with the costumes. As for the film itself, I found it to be a bit drawn out and thought the camera angles were quite dizzying (tons of dancing and spinning involved!). The plot, however, was interesting and Keira Knightly was absolutely stunning as usual. The movie made me long for a ride on the Trans-siberian Express, wrapped in furs during the Russian winter sipping champagne. Anyways, the movie is set in 19th century aristocratic Russia, so there is lots of opulent, luxe furs, jewels, and ball gowns in rich colors involved. Even if you don’t live in Moscow, you can still get the movie’s old-world glamorous look with a few key pieces.

I think this look would be perfect for holiday parties, no? Now someone bring me to Russia please??!

What do you think? Are you planning on seeing the movie? Happy holidays everyone!

Fashionforteens’ Guide for Curvy Girls

Hey Everyone,

I’m a bit embarrassed to say, that in the (almost) 2 years I’ve  been blogging, I’ve never done anything on plus sized fashion. Since I have a self-proclaimed “boyish” non-curvy figure, I’ve been afraid to dish advice on something I don’t personally have experience with. Since I feel the issue is extremely important and that there’s not enough information out there, I’ve done my research and have assembled the most comprehensive guide to plus sized fashion I felt I could muster. While it may take a little more searching, you definitely can find fabulous, teen/young adult appropriate, plus sized clothes on a budget. All of the pieces I picked are under $100, so they won’t hurt your wallet too much.

I’d like to say, today there are a handful of gorgeous, successful and talented plus sized women in hollywood, but there’s certainly not enough. This past year, curvy gal Adele swept the grammy’s, Octavia Spencer won an Oscar, Melissa McCarthy was nominated for an Oscar, and Amber Riley (Mercedes on Glee) looked fabulous on the red carpet, while Glee won Emmy awards. If in the most notoriously image conscious society, these women have remained confident and happy, you can to.

Here are some Hollywood role models with healthy, curvy, bodies.

Amber Riley

The 26-year-old actress, most famous for her Glee character’s powerful voice and diva attitude, knows how to flatter her curves  in bold colors and interesting textures.

Tip: Smile! Amber has the most beautiful, infectious grin that makes her look good in anything she wears.

Jordin Sparks

The 22-year-old singer was the youngest contestant ever to win American Idol (she was only 16!) back in 2007. Sparks is now venturing into acting, with her first role starring in the movie Sparkle, alongside Whitney Houston. Sparks sticks to body-hugging, curve flattering fashions and likes to experiment with bold colors and designs.

Christina Hendricks

The 37-year-old Mad Men actress is best known for starring as the confident, gorgeous secretary, Joan Holloway. Both Christina and her character tend to gravitate towards slim fitting, curve skimming pieces. She told Lucky Magazine, “I have to be careful about my proportions and keep it simple. What works for me is structure and something that shows my waist.”

Fun fact: Hendricks was voted “America’s Best-Looking Woman” in a 2010 Esquire survey.

Khloé Kardshian

At 5’8, Khloé Kardashian, who has starred in the reality shows, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kourtney and Khloé take Miami, and Khloé and Lamar, towers over her sisters, Kim and Kourtney (and has a penchant for killer heels). In my oppinion, Khloé is by far the funniest and most relatable of the whole Kardashian clan. She favors sleek, glamorous, body hugging clothing in fashion forward shapes.

Inspiration: 90s Minimalism

Hey everyone,

Kate Moss, 90s ad

Naomi Cambell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford shot by Peter Lindenberg 1989

Naomi Cambell, Kate Moss, and Christy Turlington at a fashion show in the 90s

Kate Moss and Johnny Depp (weren’t they such a cute couple?!)

Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr. (another one of my favorite couples) at an event in New York c. 1998

A few notes on minimalism:

Minimalism of the 90s was essentially, a palette cleansing from the excess of the eighties. Big shoulders, big hair, and loud colors made way for clean, simple shifts in neutral colors, classic suits, and basic t-shirts. Calvin Klein popularized the look with his ads featuring supermodel Kate Moss, wearing nothing but a pair of Calvins or a white t-shirt. Designers like Phoebe Philo of Celine are bringing back this stripped-down, classic look.

How to get the look:

1. Buy classic, simple pieces in the best quality you can afford. You’ll want your clothes to stand the test of time. Also, if something is simple, you notice the small details more. An “off” fabric, color, or fit won’t fly.

2. Speaking of fit, if you can, get your clothes tailored. You’ll want the fit to be perfect, emphasizing all of your best assets and minimizing the areas you’re not as fond of. A simple blazer that’s loose on your shoulders will be very noticable, as will slacks that are too tight in the waistline.

3. Stick to natural fabrics like cotton, silk, wool etc. Basic shapes in polyester will cling in all of the wrong places and will be distracting from the overall, crisp and clean look.

4. Keep hair and makeup clean and neat-
If you’re going for a minimalist look, it’s best to keep your makeup clean and put together. Smokey bedroom eyes won’t fit with the overall look. That being said, a bright red lip with clean edges (be sure to use lipliner) will perk up your face and draw the eye to your face (see Carolyn Bessette). Wear your hair in a simple, neat style to blend in with the entire look.

5. Wear simple jewelry and accessories
While bold colors are welcome, fussy jewelry, shoes, and bags are not.

Here are some pieces to start you off…
